Christmas in the Vatican this year speaks also, and above all, of our land and, in particular, of Nocera Superiore. The handcrafted nativity scene created by the diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, displayed in St. Peter's Square, brings into the heart of Christianity symbols, architectures, and traditions of the Agro nocerino-sarnese, offering the faithful a story of faith, tradition, and identity.

For Nocera Superiore and for our Early Christian Baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore, this is a unique and rare opportunity: an extraordinary showcase that allows thousands of pilgrims from all over the world to discover one of the oldest and most significant sites of Christianity in Campania, highlighted within one of the most visited Christmas displays in the world.

The Roman day on last December 15 was marked by strong participation: over four thousand pilgrims from the diocese, led by Bishop Monsignor Giuseppe Giudice, took part in the audience with Pope Leo XIV and, in the afternoon, in the ceremony inaugurating the nativity scene, officiated by Sister Raffaella Petrini, president of the Governatorate of the Vatican City State.

The work, covering 200 square meters, intertwines the Nativity with identifying elements of the territory: the layout of the Baptistery of Nocera Superiore, the Helvius fountain of Sant’Egidio del Monte Albino, the courtyards and typical architecture of the Agro, enriched with references to local history, spirituality, and traditions. Every detail draws the eye toward the heart of the nativity scene, where the birth of Jesus becomes a universal message of hope.

The nativity scene will be open for visitors in St. Peter's Square until January 11, offering a valuable opportunity to showcase, through art and faith, the spiritual and historical heritage of Nocera Superiore.

"It was truly moving to hear the Pope pronounce the name of our Baptistery, and there was indeed a thrill felt throughout the Paul VI Hall, but especially by us Nocerini, from Nocera Superiore and the Santa Maria Maggiore community" – the words of Don Fabio Senatore, parish priest of Santa Maria Maggiore"Seeing our dome beneath St. Peter's dome is something we could never have expected. We have awaited this moment eagerly, and it was truly a gift of grace, provided by providence, which this Jubilee year has granted to our diocese and our community," concluded Don Fabio.
